A subluxation is the condition of a vertebra that has lost its proper juxtaposition with the one above or the one below, or both; to an extent less than a luxation; which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses (source: The chiropractic definition of subluxation, ART 26: pg 2, Freshman Textbook, Chiropractic Textbook-R.W Stephenson)
In layman terms: a vertebral subluxation is a condition where the spinal bone(s) is/are misaligned, interfering with the central nervous systems ability to function properly, thus hindering the potential of the human bodies overall function and performance. Since the nerves transmit signals from our brain to our vital organs, an impinged nerve can be very detrimental to one’s health.
Subluxations can occur in every spine. They are most often caused by trauma, micro-trauma and/or repetitive motion. However, as research demonstrates, poor mental state and physical toxicity can also cause a subluxation to occur within the spine. This is due to the fact that the human body functions as a whole unit; everything is connected thus everything is affected when one area of health is deficient.
The chiropractic adjustment is the physical act and the skillful art performed by a doctor of chiropractic, of correcting the vertebral subluxation by hand. With the help of a specific neurological examination, Dr. Kasandra and Dr. Leo will detect the exact location and severity of the primary subluxation, which they will then specifically adjust. The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek term “kheir” which means “by hands only”. This is the reason why both doctors at Charleston Chiropractic Studio adjust with their hands.
In certain cases, an instrument adjustment may be warranted. Adjustments are very specific, gentle and safe. They are the only external force that can actually correct a subluxation. The chiropractic adjustment will restore proper alignment of the spine and in-turn restore function to the central nervous system. Often times, the chiropractic adjustment will create a loud sound. This sound is a simple gas release within the joint created by 2 adjacent vertebras. This is the same sound that you would hear if you cracked your own knuckles.
Oftentimes the public is surprised to learn that specific chiropractic care is an essential piece of the puzzle for children’s health and well-being. With more medical interventions like cesarean-section, forceps, and vacuum extraction during the birth process than ever before, children are being left with detrimental stress on their spine and nervous system. Getting your child checked by a specific pediatric chiropractor is an incredible asset to your child’s health ensuring proper growth, development, and function of the body as a whole. Although chiropractic care is not designed to be a preventative healthcare practice, often time’s patients regain a properly functioning nervous system with chiropractic care, which indirectly can prevent a multitude of symptoms and future conditions.
Chiropractic care is extremely important for both mother and child during the terms of pregnancy.
