Why your spine and pelvis need support while you are pregnant

As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts forward, the curve in your lower back deepens, and the ligaments around your pelvis loosen to prepare for birth. Those changes are normal, but they place new demands on the joints of your spine and pelvis. Many expecting mothers in Charleston feel this as low back ache, hip discomfort, pubic bone pressure, sciatic-type leg pain, or a general sense that their body is out of alignment.

Prenatal chiropractic care at Charleston Chiropractic Studio focuses on keeping the segments of your spine and the joints of your pelvis moving well through each trimester. When those joints work the way they should, your nervous system faces less interference and your body can adapt to pregnancy with more comfort. Prenatal and pregnancy care is one of the core specializations of our studio, alongside pediatric chiropractic and Gonstead-style adjusting.

A specific, Gonstead-style approach adapted for pregnancy

Charleston Chiropractic Studio practices specific, hands-on Gonstead-style adjusting. That matters for you during pregnancy because it means we do not apply a generic, whole-spine routine. Instead, we analyze exactly which spinal or pelvic segments are not moving correctly and adjust only those segments, with only the force needed.

During pregnancy your visits are adapted to your changing body. Positioning is modified so you are supported and comfortable at every stage, including in the third trimester, and each adjustment is delivered by hand with the gentleness your stage of pregnancy calls for. Because you see the same two doctors at every visit, your care evolves with you from the first trimester through your due date.

  • Specific analysis of the spine and pelvis rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol
  • Gentle, hands-on adjustments modified for each trimester
  • Support for pelvic balance as birth approaches
  • Care from a husband-and-wife team who both practice Gonstead-style chiropractic

Two doctors, one family-centered studio in West Ashley

Dr. Kasandra Ruettiger earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at Laurentian University before graduating Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic, where she won the Virgil Strang Award. Dr. Leo Ruettiger graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and came to the profession after chiropractic care resolved the back pain he developed as a competitive wrestler. Together they own and run Charleston Chiropractic Studio as a husband-and-wife team.

Our studio is woman-owned and built around whole-family care. Many of the mothers we adjust during pregnancy later bring their newborns in for gentle pediatric care, so the relationship you build during pregnancy can continue for your whole family. Patients have given the studio a 4.9 average rating across 178 Google reviews, and reviewers consistently mention the doctors' thoroughness, compassion, and root-cause focus.

What your first prenatal visit looks like

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your pregnancy, your health history, and what you are feeling day to day. The doctors then perform a careful, pregnancy-appropriate examination of your spine and pelvis to identify the specific segments that need attention. From there, they explain what they found in plain language and recommend a care plan built around your trimester, your comfort, and your goals for birth.

We keep scheduling practical for busy expecting parents. The studio is located at 1941 Savage Road Suite 300-D in the West Ashley area of Charleston and sees patients Monday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons, Tuesday evenings until 6:30 PM, and Thursday mornings and evenings. Families visit us from Charleston, Mt Pleasant, Summerville, James Island, and Johns Island. You can start on our new patients page or call (843) 852-4141.

Analyzed on digital X-ray. Pinpointed with Gonstead-style precision. Adjusted by hand.

Questions families ask us

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Prenatal care at Charleston Chiropractic Studio is adapted specifically for pregnancy. Dr. Kasandra and Dr. Leo Ruettiger use gentle, hands-on Gonstead-style adjusting, modify your positioning so you are supported at every stage, and adjust only the specific spinal and pelvic segments that need it. Prenatal and pregnancy care is one of the studio's core specializations.

How often should I see a chiropractor while pregnant?

There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. After your first examination, the doctors recommend a care plan based on your trimester, how your spine and pelvis are functioning, and how you feel. Plans are individualized to your specific presentation rather than a standard protocol, and they are revisited as your pregnancy progresses.

Can chiropractic care help with pregnancy back pain and sciatica?

Low back pain, hip discomfort, and sciatic-type leg pain are among the most common reasons expecting mothers visit us. Our care targets the spinal and pelvic joints contributing to those symptoms rather than masking them. The studio also provides dedicated care for back pain and sciatica outside of pregnancy.
