Stress & Nervous System Care in Charleston, SC

Stress does not stay in your head. It shows up in your shoulders, your jaw, your sleep, and your spine. At Charleston Chiropractic Studio in West Ashley, Dr. Leo and Dr. Kasandra Ruettiger use specific, Gonstead-style chiropractic care to support the nervous system that has to process everything your week throws at you.

Why stress is a spinal issue, not just a mental one

When you are under sustained pressure, your body responds physically. Muscles along the neck and upper back tighten and hold that tension for hours at a time. Your posture collapses forward at the desk or the steering wheel. Sleep gets shorter and shallower, so the tissue never fully resets. Over weeks and months, that constant guarding can affect how individual spinal segments move, and your spine houses the very nervous system that coordinates your stress response in the first place.

That connection is why stress care belongs in a chiropractic office. Our practice is built around a simple idea that patients repeat throughout our reviews: address the root cause, not just the symptom. For stress, the symptom might be a stiff neck, tension headaches, or that permanent knot between your shoulder blades. The root question we ask is what your spine and nervous system are doing underneath all of it.

You do not need a dramatic injury to benefit from this kind of care. Many of the people we see are simply carrying a demanding season of life, a stressful job, a new baby, a packed family schedule, and their body is keeping the score.

How we evaluate stress and nervous system function

Your first visit starts with an unhurried conversation. We want to know where you feel your stress physically, how you sleep, what your days demand of your body, and what you have already tried. Unrushed, personalized visits are one of the most common themes in the feedback our patients leave, and that starts on day one.

From there, Dr. Leo or Dr. Kasandra performs a hands-on spinal examination in the Gonstead tradition, analyzing your spine segment by segment rather than treating it as one generic column. When your case calls for imaging, we have digital radiography on site, so X-rays can be taken and reviewed with you in our West Ashley office before any care begins.

The goal of the evaluation is precision. If specific spinal segments are misaligned or restricted, we identify exactly which ones, and your care plan is built around those findings instead of a one-size-fits-all routine.

What stress-focused care looks like here

Adjustments at Charleston Chiropractic Studio are specific by design. Both doctors practice Gonstead-style adjusting, delivering controlled, hands-on corrections to the exact segments identified in your examination. The intent is to restore normal structure and motion so your nervous system can do its job with less interference, helping your body regulate and manage everyday stress rather than simply masking how it feels.

Depending on what your evaluation shows, your plan may also draw on other services we provide in house:

  • Soft-tissue therapy for the chronic muscle tension that stress builds into the neck, shoulders, and upper back
  • Corrective and therapeutic exercise to strengthen postural muscles worn down by long desk hours
  • Posture and ergonomic assessment when your workstation or daily habits keep feeding the tension
  • Nutritional and wellness counseling to support the daily habits that shape how your body handles pressure

Care for the whole stressed-out family

Stress rarely affects just one person in a household, and this is a family practice by design. Dr. Leo and Dr. Kasandra Ruettiger are a husband-and-wife team who have been serving Charleston since 2019 from our office at 1941 Savage Road Suite 300-D in West Ashley. They care for every stage of life, from infants and expecting mothers to working parents and grandparents, with patients coming from Charleston, Mt Pleasant, Summerville, James Island, and Johns Island.

Dr. Leo graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 2018. Dr. Kasandra earned her Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida, graduating Cum Laude in 2015 after completing a Biomedical Science degree at Laurentian University. The practice holds a 4.9 rating across 178 Google reviews, and patients consistently describe both doctors as knowledgeable, compassionate, and thorough.

Questions families ask us

Can a chiropractor actually help with stress?

Chiropractic care does not remove the stressors in your life, but it addresses how your body carries them. Stress commonly shows up physically as neck and shoulder tension, headaches, and postural strain, and your spine protects the nervous system that coordinates your stress response. Dr. Leo and Dr. Kasandra Ruettiger use specific Gonstead-style adjustments to correct spinal segments that are misaligned or restricted, supporting nervous system regulation so your body can manage everyday pressure better.

What happens at my first stress-focused visit?

You get a thorough history and an unhurried conversation about how stress shows up for you, followed by a segment-by-segment Gonstead-style spinal examination. If your case calls for imaging, we can take digital X-rays on site at our West Ashley office and review them with you before any care begins. Your plan is then built around your specific findings.

I mostly feel stress as tight shoulders and headaches. Is this page still for me?

Yes. Muscle tension across the neck and shoulders and tension-type headaches are among the most common physical faces of stress. Your plan may combine specific adjustments with soft-tissue therapy, corrective exercise, and a posture and ergonomic assessment, all available in our office, depending on what your examination shows.

How often would I need to come in?

There is no standard protocol, because there is no standard patient. Visit frequency depends on what your examination and history show. Some people need a short course of focused care, while others choose ongoing wellness visits to help maintain spinal structure and function through demanding seasons of life. We will lay out the recommendation and the reasoning before you commit to anything.
