The short answer
See a chiropractor when back or neck pain lasts more than a few days, keeps coming back, or gets in the way of sitting, sleeping, driving or work. For most back and neck pain, a chiropractic exam is a good first step.
Most back and neck pain is not dangerous. But pain that keeps returning usually has a cause that rest alone does not fix. A chiropractic exam looks for that cause.
7 signs it is time to see a chiropractor
Use this checklist. If two or more sound like you, an exam is a good next step.
- The pain has lasted more than 3 to 5 days.
- It comes back every few weeks or months.
- You are stiff every morning or after sitting.
- Turning your head to drive or check your blind spot hurts.
- Pain runs into your hip, leg, shoulder or arm.
- It started after a fall, a lift, sports or a car accident.
- Rest, stretching or pain pills help for a day, then it returns.
Rare warning signs we screen for
Every first visit includes a check for the rare signs that point to a problem outside the spine. If we find one, we refer you to the right doctor. These include:
- Fever with back pain, or fever with a stiff neck
- Pain with unexplained weight loss
- Pain that is severe at night no matter how you lie
One true emergency: sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin, or new weakness in a leg means go to the ER right away.
Pain after a car accident is different. Many whiplash and back injuries do not hurt until days later, so we recommend a chiropractic exam soon after a crash, even before pain starts. Our auto injury care page explains what that visit looks like.
MedlinePlus, from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, lists more about back pain and neck problems.
Chiropractor or wait it out?
Here is a simple way to sort it out.
| What you notice | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Mild soreness after yard work that fades in a day or two | Rest, gentle movement, watch it |
| Pain lasting more than a few days, or that keeps coming back | Chiropractic exam |
| Stiff neck or back from desk work, phones or driving | Chiropractic exam and posture check |
| Pain running down the leg or arm, without weakness | Chiropractic exam |
| Pain after a car accident, even if it is mild | Chiropractic exam soon after the crash |
What happens at a first visit
At Charleston Chiropractic Studio in West Ashley, a first visit starts with questions: when the pain started, what makes it worse, and what you have tried. Then Dr. Leo or Dr. Kasandra Ruettiger does a hands-on exam of your spine in the Gonstead tradition, checking each vertebra one at a time.
We have digital X-ray in the office. When your case calls for it, we take images and go over them with you before any care starts. New patients can claim our $79 website special, which covers the consultation, exam and X-rays.
If chiropractic is a good fit, you get a plan built for your spine. If it is not, we tell you and point you to the right kind of doctor.
What the research says
Spinal manipulation is one of the non-drug options researchers have studied for low back pain and neck pain. The National Institutes of Health keeps a plain-language summary of spinal manipulation, including what is known about benefits and side effects.

Common questions
How long should I wait before seeing a chiropractor for back pain?
If back pain has not improved after 3 to 5 days, or it keeps coming back, it is a good time for an exam. After a car accident, come in soon even if the pain is mild.
Can a chiropractor help with a stiff neck?
Often, yes. A stiff neck from desk work, phone use or sleeping wrong is one of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor. An exam shows which joints are not moving well.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in South Carolina?
No referral is needed to book a visit at Charleston Chiropractic Studio. You can call the office or request a time online.
Will I get X-rays at my first visit?
Only if your history and exam show they would help. Our West Ashley office has digital X-ray on site, so it can be done the same day.
